Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh's 2006 Letter to TORn | November 19, 2006

On November 19, 2006, TORn published an email sent to them and addressed "Dear One Ringers." Wingnut Films, was in a pending lawsuit against New Line Cinema over proceeds from the Lord of the Rings films and Jackson and Walsh wanted that to be settled before beginning negotiations to produce a film of The Hobbit. New Line Cinema's time option on The Hobbit was running out, however, and they were unwilling to wait so they informed Wingnut that "the studio is going to have to hire another director." The letter continued,

"Given that New Line are committed to this course of action, we felt at the very least, we owed you, the fans, a straightforward account of events as they have unfolded for us. We have always had the greatest support from The Ringers and we are very sorry our involvement with The Hobbit has been ended in this way. ... Warmest regards to you all, and thanks for your incredible support over the years." 2

In early October 1999, TORn received a New Line Press Release for the Lord of the Rings film trilogy before it is sent to press outlets or newswires. The cover letter says, "please keep my (Gordon Paddison) information in your files and i hope to be in contact throughout production and release of the film. new line is very interested in working with fan sites. i know that you are as dedicated to this film as we are." 4

Calisuri, along with other representatives of internet fan site, were included in the contingency of print and media journalists that were flown to the 2001 Cannes Film Festival by NewLine to view a 25 minute LOTR preview reel. Kristin Thompson in The Frodo Franchise credits the inclusion of internet fan sites as a acknowledgement of the growing importance of the internet in publicizing films. 5
